MUNNS RETURNS TO REBELS FOR HER FOURTH SEASON

September 21, 2023

Essex Rebels are pleased to announce the return of sharpshooting guard, Ashleigh Munns, who returns for her fourth season as a Rebel.

Munns, who is a local girl having been born and raised in Basildon, Essex, is a familiar face to Rebels fans with her now becoming the longest-serving women’s player at the club.

Ashleigh joined Sevenoaks Suns at a young age as a promising young talent, before making the move to Southern Utah Thunderbirds in the US where she had a successful four-year collegiate career. Munns would return to Sevenoaks Suns and make history by helping the Suns to their first-ever WBBL Championship in the 2017-18 season.

The 29-year-old would then decide to take a break from playing basketball to focus on her teaching career, however, ex-coach Tom Sadler was persistent in his pursuit of Munns to convince her to return to basketball and sign for the Essex Rebels.

Ashleigh has been a mainstay of the Rebels team for the past three seasons, establishing herself as one of the most consistent shooters in the league, often being deadly behind the arc. The guard finished with an average of 7.5 points, 1.2 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game last season.

Commenting on returning to the Rebels for her fourth season, Ashleigh Munns said:

I’m excited for another season at the place I’ve called home for 4 years now. In the ups and downs of life, Essex has been a constant through it all. I’m looking forward to getting back out there with my favourite team and seeing what we can do this year.

Ashley Cookson, Head of Basketball Performance, had this to say about Munns returning:

We are very happy to have Ashleigh back in the red and black this season. Ashleigh has been a part of the program for a while now, and her experience in this league is a net positive for our team. A fan favourite that brings leadership qualities and not to mention, more firepower from the 3-point line. I am excited to coach Ash and keep building on the Rebels culture with her.”

Welcome back Ashleigh!

Don’t forget to come and cheer for Ashleigh and the rest of the team as we try to upset the reigning WBBL Playoff champions, London Lions, on Saturday 21 October to kick off our WBBL campaign.
