Game Preview: Essex Rebels Women vs London Lions

October 03, 2025

After a long off-season, the Essex Rebels Women make their highly anticipated return to the court this Saturday, 4 October, when they host the London Lions at the Essex Sport Arena. Tip-off is set for 4pm, with both teams battling it out in the Super League Basketball Trophy.

This marks the Rebels’ very first competitive game of the 2025/26 campaign, while the Lions have already been tested twice in Trophy action. London opened with a dominant 96–27 win over Cardiff Met Archers before falling on the road to last year’s league and SLB Cup winners, the Oaklands Wolves, 62–85.

Player to Watch – Annika Shah (London Lions)
One to keep an eye on for London is rookie guard Annika Shah, fresh out of NCAA Division I with Cal Poly. Despite just beginning her professional career, Shah has quickly made an impact in the Lions’ Trophy campaign, leading the team in both points (25 PPG) and assists (5 APG), while ranking second in steals (2.5 SPG). Her ability to score and create plays will be a key factor for London as they look to trouble the Rebels’ defence.

Rebels Head Coach Ashley Cookson will be eager to see his side build on last year’s sixth-place finish, with an eye on pushing higher up the table this season. The roster has been strengthened with exciting new arrivals, including EuroCup guard Quinesha Lockett, versatile forward Rhema Ogele, and playmaker Paige Meyer who will bring energy, leadership, and offensive power to the squad. Speaking ahead of the game, Head Coach Ashley Cookson said:

““We’re excited to be tipping off the new season and can’t wait to share it with our incredible fans. This group has real character with a great blend of experience and youthful energy. The group is a joy to be around and we’re excited to get our campaign underway.”

With London aiming to bounce back from their last result, and the Rebels determined to open their campaign in style, fans can expect an intense and competitive clash. The Essex Sport Arena is set to be buzzing once again — and with new faces on the court, the Rebels will be aiming to give their home crowd the perfect opening performance.
