Game Preview: Essex Rebels vs Derby Traiblazers

This Saturday, 14 February, the Essex Rebels return to the Essex Sport Arena for British Championship Basketball action as they face the Derby Trailblazers.

After last weekend’s loss on the road to the Reading Rockets, the Rebels will be keen to get back to winning ways. The Trailblazers, meanwhile, are also chasing a positive result after four consecutive defeats to Nottingham, Reading, Loughborough, and Newcastle.

The Rebels will be looking for revenge after a heavy 117–80 defeat in the reverse fixture, while also aiming to extend their advantage in the table. Currently, Derby sit two places and points below Essex, with two games in hand — making this weekend’s clash a crucial step toward playoff contention.

Before the game, Head Coach Joe Hart said: 

“This game is pivotal to how things play out for the rest of the year. Derby is a team with a lot of veterans, and they have a lot of size. Last time we played them, we were beaten handily. The defensive performance we saw last weekend will need to carry over in order for us to be successful.” 

Player To Watch: Raheem May-Thompson 

Despite the Trailblazers’ poor run of form, Raheem May-Thompson has been a bright spark. Last time out against the Newcastle Knights – who find themselves top of the league – the forward brought in 16 points, complete with three defensive rebounds.  

With a vast amount of experience in top-level basketball and coming in at 6’6, the Rebels will have to be able to contain the vet.
