Essex Rebels fall short to Milton Keynes
The Essex Rebels suffered another close defeat in British Championship Basketball action this weekend, falling 74–84 to the Milton Keynes Breakers at the Essex Sport Arena.
Following the result, the Rebels sit 10th in the standings, six points clear of next weekend’s opponents, Hemel Storm. Although Hemel have a game in hand, a positive result in the next fixture will be crucial for the Rebels as the season enters a decisive stretch.
Despite the final scoreline, the game began positively for the home side. A back-and-forth opening quarter saw the Rebels trailing 12–19 before a Miles Brown three-pointer sparked a comeback. A further three-point effort from Kyron Martin, followed by a lay-up from Brown, brought the scores level. Martin then knocked down another three to hand the Rebels a 28–25 lead heading into the second quarter.
The second period started brightly for the hosts. Brown added another three-pointer early on, and Tom Child converted twice from the free throw line to stretch the lead to eight points. However, the Breakers responded well and began to slightly shift the momentum. Jordan Spencer hit a pair of free throws to draw the visitors level, before Xavier Wilson converted a lay-up to restore their advantage. The duo then combined for back-to-back three-pointers to complete a swift turnaround, putting the visitors firmly in control. A late response from the Rebels — courtesy of three-pointers from Child and Johnny McKew — kept them within touching distance, but the Breakers still took a 46–42 lead into halftime.
The third quarter remained closely contested, with the Rebels battling their way back and reclaiming the lead on several occasions. A trademark three-pointer from Brown gave the home side a 56–53 advantage. With 30 seconds remaining in the quarter, Remy Udeh converted a lay-up that looked set to give the Rebels the edge heading into the final period. However, Ben Baker-McCann responded just 15 seconds later to tie the game at 62–62.
The contest stayed finely poised throughout the fourth quarter. Udeh once again levelled the score at 70–70 with five minutes to play, but the turning point quickly followed. Chase Thompson drained consecutive three-pointers for the visitors, creating a gap that proved too large for the Rebels to recover from. Another late three-pointer from the Breakers sealed the 84–74 victory for the away side at the Essex Sport Arena.
Following the result, Head Coach Joe Hart said:
Another tough loss especially at home in front of a great crowd. A good week a practice is needed to prepare for a Hemel team that is playing a lot better than at the beginning of the season.
The Rebels will be in action at the Essex Sport Arena next weekend, as they take on the Hemel Storm in a crucial game and a special double-header celebrating International Women’s Day at the Essex Sport Arena.
