AMERICAN GUARD TURNER RETURNS TO REBELS

September 21, 2023

Essex Rebels welcome back talented American guard, Daniella Turner, for the upcoming season.

Rebels acquired Turner from Gloucester City Queens following their withdrawal from the league last season and it didn’t take long for Daniella to make an instant impact for the team. Turner featured in 17 WBBL games for the Rebels, averaging 11.8 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game, giving her the second highest ranking in the team behind Sune Swart.

Turner, who comes from Boca Raton, Florida, joined the Rebels after a highly successful collegiate career at Colorado Mesa University where she ranked first in the league and second nationally for made field goals (217), as well as shooting 47.2% from the field and averaging an exceptional 19.1 points per game. These impressive performances earnt Turner a D2 All-American Honourable Mention and the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Women’s Player of the Year award.

The 5”10’ combo guard can play as either point or shooting guard and has developed a reputation for her effortless step-back jump shot from the field that earnt her regular spots in the WBBL All-Star Five Team of the Week.

Rebel fans will have special memories of Daniella Turner’s debut season with the club, especially her standout 21-point performance that helped cause a big upset in front of a WBBL record-breaking crowd when Rebels beat the Leicester Riders 73-71 after a nail-biting finish at the Essex Sport Arena.

Commenting on returning to the Rebels for her second season, Daniella Turner said:

“I’m looking forward to seeing what we can do as a team and playing for Ash Cookson and learning from him as well as my teammates. Ready to get the season started and showcase what we can do as a team.”

Ashley Cookson, Head of Basketball Performance, had this to say about Daniella returning:

“We are happy to have Daniella returning this coming season. She is really keen to build on her rookie season and is dedicated to helping build on the success of last season. Daniella has put in the work over the summer to expand upon her skillset and is hungry to bring more for 23-24.”

Welcome back Daniella!

Make sure you come and support Daniella and the rest of the team as we try to upset the reigning WBBL Playoff champions, London Lions, on Saturday 21 October to kick off our WBBL campaign.
