Rebels Secure First Win of the Season Against Portsmouth
The Essex Rebels secured their first win of the season with a convincing 99–77 victory over Portsmouth Force at the Essex Sport Arena, following a strong second-half performance and a much-improved defensive effort.
The first quarter was a closely contested battle, with both teams exchanging baskets. The Rebels were still finding their rhythm, potentially feeling the effects of having played the previous evening against the Worthing Thunder. Meanwhile, Portsmouth showed excellent shooting form and capitalised on their opportunities to take a 26–21 lead into the second quarter.
The second quarter saw an improvement from the Rebels, who began to settle into a better rhythm offensively. However, Portsmouth remained difficult to separate from, and the Rebels were unable to establish a lead before the break. Essex headed into half-time trailing 47–41.
The Rebels continued to score effectively in transition, creating opportunities for breakaway layups, but defensively the team struggled to contain Portsmouth’s offense. The Force scored 41 points in the first half, highlighting the need for a stronger defensive response.
Going into the second half, Michael Amako was a catalyst for the Rebels’ defensive improvement, applying pressure and creating turnovers that helped shift the momentum of the game. His defensive impact continued throughout the contest, finishing with an impressive six steals.
The increased energy was contagious, with the entire team beginning to defend with greater intensity while maintaining their offensive flow. The Rebels continued to thrive in transition, producing breakaway layups, dunks and three-pointers to build a stronger advantage. Essex finished the third quarter with a 72–60 lead, having outscored Portsmouth 31–13 in the period.
The fourth quarter was the Rebels’ best of the game defensively, allowing Portsmouth to score just 12 points. Essex maintained control at both ends of the floor and continued to execute offensively, closing out a 99–77 victory.
The team also took better care of the ball compared with the previous game against Worthing, while doing a good job of finding its shooters. Ethan Conway led the charge from beyond the arc, finishing with five made three-pointers.
The result marks the Rebels’ first win of the season, and following the victory, Essex now sit third in the BCB Group Stage.
The Rebels will be back at the Essex Sport Arena on 26 September as they take on the Reading Rockets at home in their final BCB Trophy Group stage game at home at 6:30pm. This game will be part of a double header where fans will get the chance to have a first look at the re-established NBL D3 team live in action (4pm tip-off).
