Essex Rebels Men’s Volleyball players rising to international duty

June 04, 2024

The Essex Rebels Men’s Volleyball team has recently seen several of its talented players excel on the international stage, demonstrating the programme’s commitment to developing top-tier athletes. From physiotherapy support in international competitions, to players representing their national teams, the Essex Rebels continue to make significant strides in the volleyball community.

Ben Osborne’s Contribution to the GB Women’s Sitting Volleyball Team

Ben Osborne, a 21-year-old from Portsmouth, has showcased his skills beyond the court by serving as the team sports therapist for the GB women’s sitting volleyball team. He travelled with the team to Bosnia for the Paravolley Champions League Silver event under the club name ‘Panthers’. The tournament, held on 18th & 19th May, saw the team win bronze, placing them in a strong position as they prepare for the Golden League in Nottingham next month.

Reflecting on this experience, Ben said, “Having the opportunity to gain more experience within the world of physiotherapy whilst also working within a sport I am passionate about is a privilege that I will forever be grateful for.”

Thomas Shatimehin’s Milestone Achievements

Thomas Shatimehin, has made significant strides in his volleyball career this season. Selected for the first time to represent England last August, Thomas has quickly made his mark. In December 2023, he played a pivotal role in England’s historic victory at the Novotel Cup, marking the first time England has won the cup. Recently, Thomas returned from playing in the England vs. Austria match, further solidifying his position in the national team.

“It’s such an honour to represent my country and to be able to be part of this amazing team and the call-up of the National Team,” Thomas shared, reflecting on his journey.

Rebels Shine in Scotland vs. England Exhibition

Rebels’ players Euan Fraser, Asher Miller, and Nico Gajkiewicz recently represented Scotland in an exhibition match against Team England. Their participation highlights the talent and dedication present within the Essex Rebels squad.

Head Coach Alex Porter expressed his pride in the achievements of his players, stating, “I’m immensely proud that Euan, Asher, Nico, and Tom continue the trend of Essex student-athletes being selected to represent their respective national teams. Over the last ten years, 30 Essex student-athletes have won their first national team caps since joining the Volleyball Performance Program, demonstrating our commitment to developing the future stars of Great Britain.”

The recent accomplishments of Ben Osborne, Thomas Shatimehin, and other Essex Rebels players underscore the programme’s role in promoting athletic excellence and supporting its athletes’ ambitions on the international stage. With a strong foundation and a dedicated coaching staff, the future looks bright for the Essex Rebels and their continued success in volleyball.
