British Guard Leah McDerment joins the Essex Rebels
Essex Rebels Women continue to strengthen their squad for the 2024-25 Super League Basketball Women (SLBW) season with the signing of experienced British guard Leah McDerment.
McDerment, a 5-foot-9 guard from Stockport, brings a wealth of experience in British basketball to the Rebels. The British international joins Essex after a productive 2023-24 season with fellow SLBW side, Manchester Mystics, where she McDerment averaged 5.9 points per game
Despite facing injury setbacks, including a torn calf during her time with London Lions, she has consistently bounced back. Her determination was evident when she stepped onto the court as the Lions clinched the WBBL Cup in 2022, part of a historic treble-winning season.
Her experience extends beyond British shores through a successful collegiate career at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Leah was a two-time captain for the Minutewomen, and in her junior year averaged 6.2 points, 5.2 assists, and 3.5 rebounds per game, with her assist numbers ranking her 35th nationally.
McDerment has also represented Great Britain at the youth level, captaining the U16 squad and earning a spot on the U20 roster. She also gained valuable professional experience in Germany with Falcons Bad Homburger TG.
On joining the Rebels, Leah McDerment shared her thoughts:
“I’m really happy to be here, looking forward to our first game and being a part of the amazing game day experience that Essex is known for!”
As the Rebels continue to build a formidable squad for the upcoming SLBW season, the blend of international talent and homegrown experience promises an exciting campaign ahead.
Fans can see McDerment and her new teammates in action when the Rebels kick off their 2024-25 season with a local derby against Ipswich in the SLBW Trophy on Saturday 5th October at the Essex Sport Arena.
