A Tale of Two Quarters for Essex Rebels Women v Undefeated Sevenoaks Suns

March 22, 2021

The Essex Rebels Women’s basketball team suffered a home loss this past weekend as they took on the undefeated Sevenoaks Suns. The team had enjoyed a five game win streak heading into the match but couldn’t quite get over the hump to gain their sixth victory.

It was a tale of two quarters to start the game. The first quarter saw the Essex Rebels control the game’s tempo and lead 15-13, coming off a quick spurt that allowed them to jump out to a 10-3 run to start the game. However, the experienced Suns team dominated the next ten minutes, scoring 32 points and holding the Rebels to 16.

The second half saw the Rebels attempt to claw their way back into the game, going on a few runs of their own, but never really finding true rhythm on the offensive side of the ball. Despite holding the Suns to just 19 points in the half, 4 of which were scored in the 4th quarter, it was the scoring of the Suns two standout veterans who stole the game from the Rebels, holding them to their lowest scoring game on the season.

Head Coach Tom Sadler had this to say about his team’s performance, “we didn’t look ready from the start. In fact, we looked a bit scared. We didn’t execute well on either side of the ball and in the end Cat and TaYani got whatever they wanted. We turned the ball over 21 times that led to Sevenoaks scoring 16 points. That’s the game right there. We have to value the ball, share it like we were a few weeks back, and come focused and energised for all 40 minutes. I’m disappointed and I know the team are disappointed as well. But we still have half a season left. Lots of time to continue to improve and get a few more wins.”
